April 9th, 2015 Prof. Edval J. P. Santos is invited as a distinguished lecturer to the SEMINATEC 2015 in the city of Sao Paulo in Brasil. Professor Santos will present the lecture entitled: "Smart sensor technology for niche applications".

October 24th, 2011 Prof. Edval J. P. Santos attended as a distinguished lecturer in the Minicolloquium held in the University of North in the city of Barranquilla in Colombia. Professor Santos gave a lecture entitled: "Sensor development for niche applications: from transducers to circuits", rated excellent by over 100 participants.

August 16th, 2011. Prof. Edval J. P. Santos presented an invited lecture at VISION 2011, Lima Peru, under the IEEE-EDS Distinguished Lecturer program, http://www.usmp.edu.pe/vision2011/. Talks were also presented at two other universities in Lima, Peru.

July 3rd, 2011. The EDS - Recife Chapter has become a joint Electron Devices Society - Solid-State Circuits Society Chapter.

TALK 1 - TITLE: Wireless Data Acquisition for Gas Turbine Engines - Modelling the Radio Environment

Abstract: A new trend in Aeronautical Engine Monitoring is the implementation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for data acquisition replacing, at least partially, heavy and complex wiring harnesses. Augmenting wired with wireless technologies reduces cable maintenance costs, simplifies and reduces sensor and network deployment time and increased data acquisition flexibility. Embedding wireless technology into an aero-engine, even in ground testing applications, is a significant challenge, in particular because of the harsh radio environment. The WIDAGATE (Wireless Data Acquisition in Gas Turbine Engines) project, undertaken to design and simulate such a network, will be described. In particular the methodology used to model the radio environment and the resulting environment simulator will be presented.

The taught programmes and research areas will be addressed in the three different subject areas of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Music Technology. The objectives of the Department that derive from the University's values and mission statement, and the management tools that are being used to realize these objectives, will be outlined. Particular attention will be focused on the Department's internationalization agenda and its research activities in electrical engineering.

On Integration-based Methods for Device Parameter Extraction and Distortion Evaluation

We review the developments of the integration-based parameter extraction methods for semiconductor devices and circuits. We also review the integration-based methods for evaluating linearity and harmonic distortion from their static current-voltage characteristics of devices.

As far as we know, the first integration-based parameter extraction method was proposed by Araujo in 1982 and it was specifically for the determination of parasitic series resistance in solar cells. Integration acts as a low pass filter and, thus, tends to lessen the effect of measurement errors on the extraction procedure. This extraction method was generalized in 1995 for an arbitrary two-terminal device with a series resistance. An opposite approach, a method that eliminates the effects of the parasitic series resistance, was presented in 1996 by using a new integral function denominated D. Function D was generalized to a family of functions which is able to eliminate any given coefficient of a polynomial.

Function D was used in 2002 to design, optimize and fabricate a bipolar transconductor with maximum static transfer function linearity. This transconductor was composed of two parallel-connected non-linear blocks: a hyperbolic tangent-type transconductor and hyperbolic sine-type transconductor. This transconductor work inspired the same year, the development of a procedure to evaluate harmonic distortion using function D.

A new method for the extraction of coefficients in an nth-order polynomial function was presented in 2007 based on using successive integrations. This method was still not fully immune to experimental noise because it involved operations which did not include integration of the device's static I-V characteristics. This limitation was recently removed by the new method denominated "Full Successive Integrals Method" (FSIM). This method can be used as an efficient tool to calculate any kth-order harmonic distortion in semiconductor devices for any input amplitude, without having to perform Fourier or AC analysis.

We will also review and scrutinize the following existing integration-based methods for extracting threshold voltage in MOSFETs, biased in the linear region: (1) integral method; (2) transition method; and (3) Normalized mutual integral difference operator method. We will also review the following two integration-based methods for extracting threshold voltage in the saturation region: (1) H function method and (2) G1 function method. Finally, we will review a method to evaluate the location of a maximum value of a given function with high level of noise by using integration.
